David Jensen

David R. Jensen, LSCSW, LCMFT, LCAC, RPT, passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. 

He was born on October 13, 1952 in Garnett, KS to Russell and Delma Jensen. He grew up in Lawrence, KS and graduated from Lawrence High School. David went on to earn a B.A. in Psychology and Corrections from Washburn University, Cum Laude, as well as a Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas. David also completed two years of Marriage and Family Training at the Menninger Foundation. He played football in 1970 and 1971, and was a member of the Psychology Honor Society, Psi Chi. 

David began his academic career at Washburn University in 1986 serving as an adjunct for Criminal Justice, Human Services, and Social Work. In 2011, he was appointed as practicum coordinator/lecturer for the Social Work department. 

David was a valued member of the Washburn University School of Applied Studies, Social Work Department, serving as practicum coordinator and adjunct professor. He was also a valued member of the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare where he taught for many years. 

His students enjoyed hearing about his experience in the field. They found him to be very knowledgeable, passionate, kind, and smart. Many students commented on how willing he was to help and that he always gave good feedback on assignments. He will be missed.

David enjoyed running, gardening, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. When he could he enjoyed attending their activities. 

David married Pat Herrera-Thomas. She survives. Other survivors include daughters, Courtney Jensen-Sanders and Jody Jensen; step-sons, Jonathan Herrera-Thomas (Madeline Herrera), and Andrew Herrera-Thomas; grandchildren, Isaiah Sanders, Jarin Sanders, Chloe Jensen, and Anders Herrera; sister, Deanna Old; a nephew, Aaron Old; and a niece, Susan Tucker. 

He was preceded in death by his father, and a nephew, Brandon Old. 

A celebration of David's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center at Washburn University, 1700 SW College Avenue, Topeka, KS.
